Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel is a Religious Society, founded by St. Louis De Montfort in France in the year 1715. Their main calling is to impart education to the youth in a largely illiterate milieu, while ardently living the religious life. The members of the Society work in the field of education and social empowerment in over 35 countries. They proudly share the common philosophy of the Catholic Church in general, while drawing on their rich educational experiences and traditions, inherited as a Society over the last three hundred years.
The Indian saga of the Society began on the 11th of September 1903, when three French Brothers arrived at Pondicherry. In 1904, the first Montfortain institution was started at Tindivanam, in Tamilnadu. This was for imparting technical education to the children. They started their first academic school in 1917, on the Shevroy Hills of Yercaud in Tamilnadu. Today, the members of society have their presence in almost all the States, with over two hundred institutions spread literally from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Delhi to Mizoram.
Actively participating in diverse fields of apostolate that include formal and non-formal technical and academic education; care, education and rehabilitation of the physically and mentally challenged; the care of the elderly people; empowerment of women and the marginalized; and adoption and implementation of programmes aimed at the upliftment of the downtrodden in the rural and urban areas.
In their educational apostolate, they have their primary option in favour of the educationally and economically less favoured, with priority given to value formation of the young. They collaborate with the concerted action of educators, parents and other professional bodies who also work in the same fields for the country's cultural, social and technical development. A holistic approach to education is their forte as they firmly believe that a young person learns from his/her school experiences. Hence a whole lot of programmes and an ideal environment is set for the young in all their educational institutions.
